The Kings Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management is a highly intensive and challenging course which is taught at NVQ Level 4 (equivalent to first year undergraduate level). Students who successfully complete the course will be able to join Year 2 of an undergraduate degree course the following September.
The course is studied as a 9-month programme (over 3 terms). In addition to taught classes, students are expected to complete extensive private study plus individual projects and presentations.
Students can choose to follow either the Level 4 Diploma in Hotel Management, the Level 4 Diploma in Tourism Management, or both together. Successful completion of all modules will lead to both qualifications being achieved.
The academic content of the course will be underpinned by visits to local businesses and organisations, and by lectures given by hospitality and tourism professionals.
All students follow core modules. There are also specific modules depending on wherther students want to follow the Diploma in Tourism Management, the Diploma in Hotel Management, or both.
Core modules
Business Computing
This module focuses on information technology in a business context within the hospitality and tourism industries. Students will be able to create, manage and present data, business documentation and presentations.
Finance for Hospitality and Tourism
This module will enable students to understand, prepare and analyse financial and sales information within a hospitality and tourism context. Students will be able to interpret financial accounts, learn how to handle credit and cash transactions, as well as calculate and control costs.
Understanding the Global Hospitality and Tourism Industries
This module will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the scope, structure and future developments of the global hospitality industry, its operations and facilities. They will also look at the nature and structure of the tourism industry and its products from both a local and international perspective.
Business Operations
This module enables students to develop an understanding of the complexity of hospitality and tourism business operations. It will allow them to develop the key skills needed to undertake the activities that are expected of supervisors and managers.
Building Customer Relationships
This module enables students to appreciate the factors involved in meeting a variety of customer needs and wants within the hospitality and tourism industries.
Diploma in Tourism Management modules
Travel Agency and Tour Guiding
This module provides students with a broad understanding of the retail travel industry and tour guide operations. It will provide an introduction to the principles and practices of tour guiding and travel techniques to ensure an effective business.
Destination Analysis
This module provides students with a holistic understanding of destination analysis by investigating established and developing destinations. The social, cultural and political features of destinations will be investigated and students will be expected to understand and apply a destination audit.
Diploma in Hotel Management only
Hospitality Operations
This module focuses on the various operations that are involved within the hospitality industry. Students will gain an appreciation of the value of the operations and will build knowledge and know-how that can be applied to this industry
