The Foundation in Tourism and Hospitality Management is an intensive course which is available as a 9-month standard programme (over 3 terms) or as an accelerated 6-month programme (over 2 terms). All students on the course complete the CTH Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality. In addition, students on the 9-month Foundation course also complete the CTH Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality Level 2.

The course provides a minimum of 500 hours of tuition over 2 terms and 650 hours of tuition over 3 terms. Students are expected to complete extensive private study. Students with IELTS 4.5 should complete the 9-month course from September to June. Students with IELTS 5.5 can follow the 9-month course (September to June) or the accelerated 6-month course from January to June.

Course content

Term 1:

CTH Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality Level 2

Students who complete the full 9-month course will begin their course by doing the CTH Certificate in English for Tourism and Hospitality Level 2 (from September to December) combined with additional lessons in IELTS preparation and study skills. The CTH Certificate in English for Tourism

and Hospitality is a language-based course focussing on English used in the Hospitality and Tourism sector. The course will prepare students either to work in the sector or progress to academic courses relating to hospitality and tourism. This qualification is designed to equip students with the language skills and vocabulary required in their professional careers and will bring their linguistic skills up to an Upper-Intermediate level. Although language-based, the course is practical in approach, with industry-related case-studies and exercises which allow students to gain insights into the industry. This will improve confidence when dealing with correspondence, customers, colleagues and external parties.

Terms 2 and 3: CTH Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality

In terms 2 and 3 (from January to June), all students will complete the CTH Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality supplemented by additional IELTS preparation and study skills sessions. This section of the course is taught at NVQ Level 3 (equivalent to A-level).

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to join an undergraduate degree course the following September. The CTH Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality consists of four academic modules as shown right. Each module requires a minimum of 120 study hours and also requires students to complete various assignments and presentations involving extensive private study and research.

CTH Modules:

Introduction to the Tourism Industry

This module deals with transportation, accommodation, attractions and events, destinations and tour operators, and travel agents.

Introduction to the Hospitality Industry

This module looks at food, accommodation, beverages, facilities, grading and classification systems and restaurants, bars, clubs and other outlets.

Introduction to Marketing for Hospitality, Travel and Tourism

This module focusses on the marketing mix, statistics and data analysis, market and competitor analysis, marketing activities and macro and micro economic factors 

Introduction to Customer Service for Hospitality, Travel and Tourism

This module deals with corporate philosophy and culture, customer care, expectations and feedback and customer relationships.

The academic content of each module will be underpinned by external visits and by lectures given by hospitality and tourism professionals.
