The Kings English for Academic Study program is a unique course
designed to prepare you for the intellectual and linguistic demands
of degree-level study in the USA.
The program can be studied over 2 or 3 terms, depending on your language level when you start and your rate of progress. The syllabus has been carefully developed by our English language and academic staff.
The course is highly intensive. Each term provides 280 hours of tuition. You will have an average of 25 to 28 hours of lessons each week, plus 12 to 15 hours of private study.
The course is carefully designed to integrate with the academic program for
which it will prepare you. There is a progressive series of English language
teaching modules. Each builds on the one before it.
- Close, individual attention in small groups
- Regular tutorials so that tutors and the Director of Studies can provide individual guidance
- Frequent progress tests
- Regular reports (copies sent to parents or sponsors).
Academic study skills
Module 1: General Academic and Study Skills
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Read critically about the real world and apply theoretical knowledge and constructs to dynamic real world situations
- Articulate a particular view while analyzing alternatives objectively and acknowledging all sides of an argument
- Focus on the main features in a lecture or seminar and take concise and relevant notes
- Gather information for an assignment from a range of written and verbal sources, making full use of library and ICT resources
- Extract and interpret information from graphical sources
- Construct coherent written arguments and oral presentations using language appropriate to the subject and to the style of presentation
- Support these by appropriate use of tables, maps, charts and diagrams, making good use of the possibilities offered by word processing and spreadsheet software.
Module 2: Data Handling and Information Technology
At the end of this module you will:
- Be able to structure, store and analyze numerical and non-numerical data making sophisticated use of generic computer packages such as MS Excel and Access
- Be able to make sophisticated use of document handling software such as Word to present text and data together with clarity
- Be able to represent data using a variety of graphical forms
- Be able to analyze numerical data using standard statistical methods
- Appreciate the application of statistics to modelling real-world situations
- Understand notions of statistical testing.
Your First Year University Pathway Program will also include Test Preparation
for the formal examinations you will need to be accepted on to Undergraduate or Graduate programs in the USA.
Depending on the subject and level of your intended degree, you can choose a preparation course for SAT, GRE or GMAT. Kings also runs a separate TOEFL iBT Preparation Course.
